What Is a Mole?

A mole (or “nevus”) develops when pigment-producing skin cells (melanocytes) cluster instead of being evenly distributed. These cells give skin its natural colour.

Moles are common and usually harmless. They may:

Darken with sun exposure
Change during adolescence or pregnancy
Appear flat or raised, round or oval

Why Skin Cancer Awareness Matters in Canada

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in Canada, and rates continue to rise. In 2025, it’s estimated that:

About 10,800 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer, and approximately 1,250 will die from it.

Multiple colours
Diameter growing larger
Evolution or change over time
